The Rising/Next Generation
Concerns and Desires
What does the rising generation want? And, who are they? It depends on which generation you’re talking about. Baby Boomers? Gen X? Millennials? Gen Z? And even after they are categorized, most importantly, who are they as individuals?
Regardless of the generation, there are a number of commonalities that the next generation … or the rising generation … experience around inherited wealth. Some of the challenges include:
- Individuation (Who are they, as unique individuals, having grown up under the shadow of giants?)
- Desire not to be known as a “trustfunder”
- Entitlement (Internal)
- Entitlement (External: What others feel they are “entitled to” from you)
- Resilience and flexibility (or lack of) after having the meteor of money land in their laps
- Uncertainty around friendships and love (Do they like me for me or the money?)
- Loneliness (No one to talk to, my concerns seem trivial)
- Daunting expectations around knowledge of investments
- Entrepreneurship (“To be or not to be,” or “to invest or not to invest”)
- Work (Why?)
- Career (My passion/dream or my parents?)
- My Passion: (What is and how do I follow my passion?)
- Conflict between living one’s dream vs. stewarding their parent’s (or grandparent’s) dream
- Becoming comfortable (and excited) with calculated risk
- Courage to make mistakes
- Coming to peace around money
- Living up to the standards set by the wealth creator
- Guilt at not having done anything to “earn” their inheritance
- The Green Closet (The secret money closet, in which it may or may not be safe to reside)
- Philanthropy (If I make too big a gift, will that “out” me, and is that okay?)
- Thoughtful Giving (How do I choose when there is so much need?)
- Trustees who don’t trust, respect or believe in me
- Confusion
